4 weeks and counting! We've gotten approval from the mothership for official Burning Man Regional status! In this newsletter we've got some important deadlines and information about citizenship, art grants and announcements on theme camps numbers and art of Forgotten City plus the changes in gate and greeters this year.
Art Grants Due Today
Art grant applications are due April 28th and we'll be making decisions on distributions on funding for projects this week. There is over $15,000 in art grant money comprising around 70% of the budget being allocated to multiple large scale art pieces, art galleries, temporary structures and fire/performance art.
Your annual citizenship price of $65 per person per annum is still available however on May 10 the price increases to $100 (You have 1 week to buy the low price ticket).
23 Theme Camps and Counting
Theme camps applications are due at the end of this week (May 2nd) however we already have 23 theme camps who have applied, space is going to be tight and we'll be opening up new areas to accommodate everyone, a draft placement map will be hitting theme camp leader's inboxes very soon to let everyone know their spot and whether they have been allocated 2 tickets to Forgotten City.
Street Sign Assembly Day - Saturday May 17th
We're inviting you on Saturday, May 17th to help cut and assemble street signs for Forgotten City. These are designed to be permanent and reused each year. We have all the supplies and just need bodies to help cut, assemble, drink a few beers and have a blast! Visit https://www.facebook.com/TheForgottenCity to get details on how you can participate.
Anchoring your Shade
There are really only two options to anchor your shade structure at FC:
Spiked Rebar - If you got a good sledge hammer then you can bash spiked rebar into the ground. 1 inch rebar works better than ½ inch and the sharper the better.
Lag Screws - With a good hammer drill and a 10 inch lag screw (about $2 from Home Depot http://goo.gl/1Pcsd) you can make light work of the hard ground. Best option is to drill into the ground first, then use a socket wrench to anchor the lag screw. Here’s a demonstration of how well this works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqVP61Ii0WQ
Gate and Greeters
This year we are separating "Gate" from "Greeters". Gate will be manned by hired professional security and will be checking IDs, tickets, getting you to sign waivers and generally all the "business stuff". The greeters station is just a little further down the entrance to The Forgotten City and you'll get to have a lot more fun at greeters camp!
At Gate you will need:
* A photo ID for every person in your vehicle
* Your ticket (See below)
* Note: If you have forgotten your ticket you will still be on the list but it will take longer to verify your information
You will have already been emailed unique printable tickets for The Forgotten City that make the job much easier for volunteers checking you in at the gate. They can use their smart phones to scan tickets and verify they are valid. If you have not received your email please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
If you need to transfer or gift your tickets to another person you can do so automatically. Just find your email confirmation and click on the ticket you want to transfer, you must provide the full name of the person you are transferring to and their email address. They will receive a ticket confirmation email once you have completed this process.
The biggest complaint at Forgotten City is sound and we've spent a lot of time trying to ensure that sound placement minimizes clashes between theme camps and with participants. With that in mind to improve everyone’s aural experience at The Forgotten City we’ve put together a sound policy that all participants must follow: http://theforgottencity.org/sound-policy.html . This is particularly applicable to those bringing out generators and for the sound camps.
Official status from Burning Man
We’ve gotten approval from Burning Man to be an official Burning Man Regional event. What does this mean? Well, first thing is that you will see a mention in Jack Rabbit Speaks very soon, giving the event exposure outside of Las Vegas. Secondly, it means that we abide by some extra rules including keeping transparent accounting of all funds in and out and running the event like a non profit with any money made being donated to charities like Burners without Borders, Black Rock Solar and Black Rock Arts Foundation.
We've had plenty of people volunteer for greeters camp but we need more to volunteer for the burn perimeter on Saturday and Sunday nights. There are many other volunteering opportunities so check out http://theforgottencity.org/volunteer-application.html
What to Bring to The Forgotten City
- Your ticket and photo ID in order to get in the gate and get your wristband
- Reusable cup, plate or bowl
- Tent and camping equipment for two nights
- Spiked rebar, garden stakes or 10 inch lag screws - 95% of the ground is very hard
- Food, drinks, sunscreen and water (there is no vending)
- Trash bag - this is a Leave No Trace event
- Head lamp - to see at night
- Bicycle with light - the area is large and great fun to ride around
- Camp Chair
- Playa Attire
Dogs, Kids and Nudity
Here’s the gist of it: Dogs get hurt by the terrain and loud noises, kids are usually not well catered for due to the nature of some of the forms of participation, and nudity (during the day especially) is called indecent exposure by law enforcement. Please read the FAQ for information.
